Leaders of Christian colleges and universities are no strangers to the difficulties of a changing culture and changes in the law. As the shifts in law and culture continue, these institutions of higher education are being pressured to compromise their Christian missions. When you are leading a complex operation tasked with equipping the leaders of tomorrow, these pressures can be daunting.
To operate your school in accordance with your beliefs, your school should consider many things to ensure it is prepared and protected, including, but not limited to:
· Employment policies: Are they up to date and consistently applied? Do the policies reflect your school’s beliefs? Does your school have job descriptions for employment positions that best protect your school’s religious liberties?
· Government funding: What sorts of strings are attached to the state and federal benefits you enjoy? Can accepting government money impact your school’s ability to follow biblical standards? Does following biblical standards threaten your ability to access the funding? How does Title IX impact your school and how will it impact your school in the future?
· Student policies: Are Christian ethics reinforced by school admissions and student conduct policies? What kinds of clubs are appropriate for your campus?
Association of Business Administrators of Christian Colleges has partnered with ADF Ministry Alliance to help prepare and protect your school for these issues and other religious liberty challenges. Through this legal membership program, your school can gain access to experienced First Amendment lawyers who are available to answer religious liberty questions, conduct document reviews and provide advice, and even represent your school in court if necessary and appropriate – it’s virtually all-inclusive for religious freedom issues.
Leaders of Christian colleges and universities shouldn’t have to bear the increasing religious liberty legal burden alone. And a school’s general counsel shouldn’t be overwhelmed by staying current on religious liberty issues when so many other legal issues need attention too.
